The textbook is right about valuation and wrong about flows. A higher risk-free rate should compress the multiple. It has. The index is still up because earnings rose faster than the multiple fell, and because the accounts selling Treasuries are not the accounts buying the S&P.
CPI is the all-items index, year over year. Treasury lines are month-end constant maturity. The dots are the latest print on the figure: Treasuries October 1, funds September, CPI August. Shaded bars are NBER recessions. Not a forecast.

Read the right edge before the history. Effective funds are 3.75%. The 10-year is 5.24%, the 20-year 5.64%, the 30-year 5.61%. August CPI is 3.7%. The curve is not pricing a Fed that is behind a fresh inflation spike. Ten-year breakevens have sat near 2.35–2.36% through the selloff. The move is the real yield — about 2.9% on the 10-year TIPS, the highest since 2008 — plus a fatter term premium.
That is the opposite of 2020–21, when funds and the long bond were pinned and CPI did the moving. It is also not 2022, when CPI led and the funds rate chased it. The 2026 shape is a long end that has run away from both the policy rate and realized inflation.
“Stocks and yields move opposite” is a discount-rate statement. Price = cash flow / (r − g), loosely. Raise r and the multiple falls, if cash flow and g do not move. The index level is the multiple times earnings. Those are different objects.
Nominal growth revises higher. Bonds sell off because the real rate clears a stronger economy. Equities rise because E rises. 2003–07 looked like this. 2026 is closer to this than to 2022.
Inflation or the term premium does the work and earnings do not. 2022 is the clean case: the multiple was the whole story. That is the relation the last cycle taught everyone.
Flight to quality. The long bond rallies while equities fall. A Treasury selloff with the S&P at the highs is the absence of this regime, not evidence of a rotation into stocks.
The multiple has already done the inverse thing. State Street’s September 21 note had the S&P forward price-to-earnings ratio down from about 23× to about 19× over the prior year as the real yield rose. That is the valuation identity working. The index did not follow the multiple down because the earnings number in the denominator got larger.
Through October 1 the S&P 500 had returned about 13% in 2026 with dividends, against a 30-year average annual return near 10%. Friday’s close was 7,722.72, up 0.73% on the day, with the Nasdaq Composite at 27,190.86. The 10-year began 2026 near 4.2%. It is more than 100 basis points higher, and the index is higher with it.
So the observation in the question is right, and the mechanism usually attached to it is not. Stocks high and yields high is a description of this tape. It is not proof that Treasury sellers funded the equity bid.
A Treasury sale has a buyer on the other side, at a higher yield. The cash does not automatically arrive in equities. The useful question is who was a reluctant seller of duration, and who was still willing to pay 26× trailing earnings.

Two holders moved the other way, which is why “foreigners sold” is too blunt. The United Kingdom, mostly private custody, rose from $880B in January to $998B in July. The Cayman Islands, a hedge-fund booking center, held $460B in July against $422B at year-end 2025. Official selling and private carry can coexist. July TIC still showed a net foreign inflow on the broad account. The long end sold off anyway, because the marginal buyer demanded a higher real yield.

The front end has stopped leading. The 2-year was about 4.78% into the October 2 week, against a 10-year at 5.24% — a 2s10s spread near 45 bp and steepening. September payrolls were +29,000 against an 84,000 consensus, with unemployment at 4.2% and −60,000 of revisions. That took a second consecutive hike off the table for the late-October meeting. It did not put a bid into the 30-year. Policy expectations and the term premium have split.

Money did not “leave bonds and enter stocks.” Bonds were sold to other bond buyers at a higher yield. Stocks were bought by a separate bid — passive savings, buybacks, and an earnings revision. Both can be true. They are not the same trade.

A clean Gordon comparison says the earnings yield should sit near the risk-free rate plus an equity risk premium, minus growth. When the earnings yield is below the 10-year, the model says you are paying for growth you have not received yet.

Three things can justify a trailing earnings yield of 3.8% against a 5.2% Treasury. Only one of them is “the market is wrong.”
Growth is being prepaid. On a one-year forward basis the gap is already gone: stocks yield about what the bond yields, before any multiple change. The Motley Fool arithmetic of September 28 is the bull version of that — at a steady 26× trailing, something like 4% earnings growth matches a 5.2% bond over a decade. The same note’s bear version is the one that matters here: if the multiple eases from 26× to 22×, 6% earnings growth loses to the Treasury. 22× would still be above the long-run average near 16×.
The equity risk premium has been competed away. A forward earnings yield in line with the 10-year means the extra return for owning the index over the risk-free asset is approximately zero on a one-year horizon, before growth. That can persist if the index is treated as a scarce compounder — passive inflows, buybacks, and a profits pool concentrated in firms that fund themselves — rather than as a claim that must clear a bond yield plus 3 or 4 points. It cannot persist if the earnings miss.
The right discount rate is not the nominal 10-year. Companies with pricing power discount real cash flows at a real rate. A 2.9% real yield is restrictive, but it is not 2022’s combination of a rising real yield and falling margins. SSGA’s point was mechanical: the multiple already fell as the real yield rose, and the earnings revision offset it. That is a description of the last year. It is not a promise about the next one.
From 2009 to 2020 the earnings yield could sit below a falling bond yield and still look fine, because the bond yield kept falling. The discount-rate tailwind is the other way now. A 19× forward multiple is the already-adjusted price, not a cheap one.
The earnings-yield gap versus the 10-year last sat near zero in the mid-2000s. Stocks rose for years on earnings. The break was credit and the economy, not the day the 10-year crossed 5%. A thin premium is a condition, not a sell signal by itself.
The path is a race between E and the multiple. The multiple has a higher hurdle than it did in September 2025, and a lower one than a pure 2022 rerun, because some of the compression has already printed.
Breakevens hold near 2.3–2.5%. Earnings grow mid- to high-single digits on AI capex and nominal GDP. The forward multiple stays in the high teens. The index can rise while the earnings yield never reopens a comfortable gap over the bond. 60/40 stops being a free lunch from the equity side. The bond is a competing asset again, at 5% nominal and about 3% real.
Official selling, the deficit calendar, and the AI bond calendar keep widening the term premium after the Fed has stopped hiking. The multiple compresses faster than E grows. This is the 2022 mechanism without the CPI spike — a real-rate shock. Long duration is the asset that keeps paying it. Equities stop being immune once the forward earnings yield is through the bond yield and still falling.

Soft labor sticks, the October meeting holds, and 2027 hike pricing comes out. Term premium stops widening because buybacks and a slower AI bond calendar meet a real buyer at 5%. Multiple stabilizes near 19× forward. Stocks keep the earnings revision. This requires the sellers in section 03 to stop being forced.

For the nine-year book this is a harder starting point, not an easier one. The September 18 framework had the S&P at 7,650.50 and a 6–8% base CAGR to year-end 2035. The index is 7,723 now, so the price base is slightly worse, and the forward equity risk premium versus a 5.24% Treasury is about zero. A 6–8% nominal equity CAGR from here is still available if earnings do the work and the multiple does not give back the four turns it has already given. It is no longer available from multiple expansion. TLT, in that same book at $81.25 on September 18, is the position that has already absorbed the discount-rate move.
The practical cut is simple. Own the equity only where the cash-flow growth is visible enough to beat a 5% risk-free hurdle after a lower multiple — not where the 2010s multiple is being asked to persist. The long bond is no longer a useless funding leg. At a 2.9% real yield it is a competing claim, and the accounts that have to own duration are the ones who have been the sellers. When they stop, the yield stops. The index does not need them to stop in order to hold. It needs earnings to keep the promise the forward multiple just made.
The inverse relation held where it lives, in the multiple. It did not have to hold in the index, and it has not. The next break, if it comes, is a term-premium break that earnings cannot outrun — not a discovery that yields and stocks are “supposed” to move opposite.
